Henri Džejms (1843-1916) poznati i uticajni britanski pisac rođen u Americi, smatra se jednim od najvažnijih predstavnika književnog realizma 19. veka. Našoj publici je poznat uglavnom po romanu „Portret jedne ledi“ i noveli „Okretaj zavrtnja.“ U svojoj plodnoj karijeri Džejms je napisao više od dvadeset romana, kao i veliki broj pripovetki, putopisa i književnih kritika. U prividnom neskladu sa svojim realizmom i temama poređenja Starog i Novog sveta, tradicije i novog morala i slobode, Džejms je celog života pisao izvanredne „gotske“ priče. Ovde je pred čitaocima izbor iz njegovih sablasnih priča, koje istovremeno pružaju dobar uvid u njegov prepoznatljiv stil i stavove.
